Our story is one which starts in Victorian Birmingham when the city was the workshop of the world. Solicitors Stephen Gateley & Sons was founded to help forward thinking Victorians prosper.

Fast forward to the 1970s
Gateley joined forces with 12-strong Bernard Wareing to launch Gateley Wareing & Co. The business was very similar; we continue to work closely with small Midlands-based businesses to help them to do great business at home and abroad.
Through the eighties and its new tech, the 1990s and the launch of the world wide web and the introduction of Google, ‘surviving’ the millennium bug, the dot.com bubble and the financial crash.

The way we work, where we work and who we work with.
Our address list has grown and we have welcomed new offices and teams to the Gateley family.
Our clients have changed and we have moved with them. We work with clients from start-ups and SMEs through to large corporates and public sector organisations.
What has stayed the same has been our focus on helping our clients to thrive and prosper. That commercial, entrepreneurial spirit goes to the heart of our business and shapes our story.

We went where no law firm had ever gone
And that story entered a new chapter in 2015 when we did something that no other law firm had done in the UK: we put aside our traditional equity partnership structure and went Plc. Being a traditional partnership can encourage partners to pursue short term wins over all else without the scrutiny that being a listed businesses brings . That wasn’t right for our clients, so that wasn’t right for us.
